The Origin of the Basilica: A Place Rich in History
The designation of the titulus Clementis, literally Clement's property, appears for the first time in the acts of the Bishop of Rome Siricius (384-398). It refers to the place of worship that would become the future Basilica of Saint Clement. The titulus Clementis is one of the 25 tituli, churches existing within Rome, identified during the Roman Councils of 499 and 595.
Councils and Papal Election in the Ancient Basilica
The ancient basilica has been the venue for councils presided over by Popes Zosimus (417) and Symmachus (499). In 533, Mercurius, a priest of the titulus Clementis, was elected Pope under the name John II (533-535).
Reconstruction after the Sack of Rome
In 1084, Rome was sacked by the troops of the Norman Robert Guiscard, which damaged the ancient basilica and put it in peril. In 1100, Cardinal Anastasius decided to rebuild the basilica using the recovered marble decoration elements. The old aisles were filled with debris, and a new basilica was erected above the remains. The ancient basilica was buried and remained forgotten for seven centuries until the excavations led by Father Joseph Mullooly.
New Religious Communities at Saint Clement
In 1403, Pope Boniface IX entrusted Saint Clement to the Augustinian Congregation of Saint Ambrose of Milan, also known as the Ambrosian monks. After the dissolution of this congregation in 1643, the basilica was entrusted to the Dominicans of Saint-Sixtus, and in 1667, it was given in perpetual ownership to the Dominican Order. Since 1677, the basilica has been managed by Irish Dominicans.
Archaeological Excavations and Fascinating Discoveries
Starting from 1857, Father Joseph Mullooly undertook excavations to uncover the remains of the ancient basilica. The clearance work continued until 1870, revealing a central part of the underground basilica as well as a Roman-era mithraeum. However, the excavations were interrupted due to the annexation of the Papal States and the permanent flooding of the Roman level. They resumed after the construction of a drainage tunnel in 1912 and continued until 1945, revealing new parts of the Roman structure beneath the ancient basilica.
