The Baths of Diocletian: A Marvel of Roman Antiquity
Discover the Baths of Diocletian, the largest Roman baths ever built in ancient Rome! These baths were the grandiose project of Emperor Maximian Hercules, known as Augustus of the West by Diocletian. The construction began in 298 and was completed in 306, shortly after the abdication of both emperors in 305.
Incredible Historical Preservation
This iconic monument has withstood the test of time with incredible preservation. When visiting the Baths of Diocletian, you will not only discover the splendor of Roman baths. By exploring these historical sites, you will be immersed in the atmosphere of the era and have the opportunity to explore other buildings and related activities that are an integral part of this exceptional site.
A Journey Through Time
These public baths were intended to serve the populous neighborhoods of Quirinal, Viminal, and Esquiline. The construction began after Maximian's return from Africa in the autumn of 298 and was completed before the death of Constantius Chlorus on July 25th, 306. The baths were built using bricks stamped with the name of Diocletian, attesting to the significance of this monumental project. The exterior walls of the central building were beautifully coated with white stucco, adding a touch of grandeur and majesty to the whole.
An Epic Decline and a New Life
Unfortunately, the Baths of Diocletian experienced a decline after the Gothic invasions in 410 and the Vandal invasions in 455. However, even in their decadence, these baths continued to partially serve until 537. They were later used as quarries for materials in other constructions and even as a site for equestrian training. But their story doesn't end there! In the 15th century, the caldarium was transformed into a church, giving rise to the magnificent basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri. Michelangelo himself was tasked with designing this new sacred edifice, thus giving new life to the remnants of the baths.
An Impressive Visit
With an area of nearly 14 hectares and a capacity of up to 3,000 people, these baths were both grandiose and luxurious. According to the writings of Olympiodorus, they contained approximately 2,400 basins. The enclosure, measuring 380 × 365 meters, contained an imposing central building measuring 250 × 180 meters. As you walk through these historically significant places, you will be transported back to the era of ancient Rome, immersing yourself in the grandeur of this fascinating civilization.
