The Capitoline Museums: A Place Steeped in History
The Capitoline Museums, located on Capitoline Hill in Rome, are a collection of art and archaeology museums. They are the primary municipal civic museum of Rome and have an exhibition area of 12,977 square meters. Founded in 1471 and opened to the public in 1734 under Pope Clement XII, they are defined as the world's first museum designed for art to be appreciated by all, not just by the owners of artworks.
Their Unique Collection
The Capitoline Museums house a remarkable collection, including marble and bronze statues, paintings, mosaics, and inscriptions, all originating from Rome and its region. These treasures are preserved in the two palaces on Capitoline Hill designed by Michelangelo: the New Palace and the Palace of the Conservators, which is the historical headquarters of the museums. More recently, some pieces are displayed at the Caffarelli Palace nearby and at the Centrale Montemartini, in a suburb of Rome.
The Foundation in the 15th Century
In the 15th century, Capitoline Hill, once famous for its temples, triumphal arches, and statues, had been stripped of its treasures. The Capitoline Museums were established in 1471 by Pope Sixtus IV to house four exceptional bronze statues. These statues, the Capitoline Wolf, Camillus, Thorn Puller, and two fragments of a colossal statue of Domitian, marked the beginning of archaeological interest in Capitoline Hill.
Enrichment in the 18th Century
In the 18th century, the collection of the Capitoline Museums was enriched through donations from various popes. Antique sculptures of great historical and artistic value converged to the Capitoline, confirming its role as a public museum of antiquities. Colossal statues, high reliefs of Marcus Aurelius, and other major pieces joined the collections, making the Capitoline Museums an inestimable artistic treasure.
The 20th and 21st Century: Expansion and Modernization
In the 20th century, the museums continued to grow, modernizing their presentation of artworks to highlight the archaeological context. New sections, such as the New Museum and the Exhedra of Marcus Aurelius, were added. In 1997, a branch was opened in the former Centrale Montemartini, offering a unique experience combining industrial and classical archaeology.
At the beginning of the 21st century, the "Grand Capitoline" project led to the redesign of a significant portion of the Palace of the Conservators, providing visitors with an even more enriching experience. The Capitoline Museums are now part of the shared museum system, perpetuating their role as guardians of the history and art of Rome.
