Located on the southern shore of Lake Bracciano, this medieval castle is a true historical treasure. A past rich in historical events
This majestic castle has witnessed numerous captivating historical events. Its history dates back to the 10th century when one of the many defense towers was built to repel Saracen attacks. In the 11th century, it was transformed into a castle by the Prefetti di Vico family. In 1234, the Orsini took possession of Bracciano, followed closely by a period of papal domination starting in 1375. The castle was expanded in the 15th century by Napoleone Orsini and his son Virginio, and became a refuge for Pope Sixtus IV when he fled the plague in Rome. Unfortunately, the city and the castle were devastated by papal troops in 1485 but quickly recovered with the construction of new fortifications.
In 1494, the castle's history took an interesting turn when Charles VIII of France and his army made a stop in Bracciano during their march against Rome. This led to the excommunication of the Orsini by the Pope. In 1496, Giovanni di Candia, son of Pope Alexander VI, unsuccessfully attempted to capture the castle. The Orsini bravely resisted that attack, and their achievements were immortalized by frescoes and paintings created by renowned artists of the time, such as Antoniazzo Romano and the Taddeo brothers and Federico Zuccari. The Italian Renaissance shone within the castle walls.
