Delve into the history of the magnificent Church of Santa Maria della Pace, which has undergone several significant stages:
1482 - A Church Dedicated to Mary
In 1482, following a miraculous event where an image of the Virgin is said to have bled, a church dedicated to Mary is built on the foundations of a chapel dedicated to Sant'Andrea de Aquaricariis. Pope Sixtus IV is deeply moved by this event and decides to have a grand church erected in honor of the Madonna at this location.
1611 - Reconstruction of the Apse and High Altar
In 1611, the apse and high altar of the church are rebuilt, thereby increasing its volume. This reconstruction is financed by the Rivaldi family, who also benefit from an imposing burial crypt located at the foot of the altar.
1656-1667 - Restoration by Pietro da Cortona
Between 1656 and 1667, Pope Alexander VII has the church restored by Pietro da Cortona, a renowned artist of the time. The architect adds the celebrated baroque facade to the building, which extends between the concave wings. Pietro da Cortona even demolishes several surrounding houses to create the asymmetrical trapezoidal space that enhances the church.
