The Church of Saint Charles at the Four Fountains in Rome: A Baroque Masterpiece
The Church of San Carlo alle Quattro Fontane, known as San Carlino, is an architectural gem located in the Monti district of Rome. Built in the Baroque style by the architect Francesco Borromini, this church is dedicated to Charles Borromeo. Its name is inspired by the intersection where it stands, adorned with four fountains representing the Tiber, Arno, Diana, and Juno. San Carlo alle Quattro Fontane is considered one of the masterpieces of Baroque architecture.
The Beginnings of San Carlo alle Quattro Fontane
The history of San Carlo alle Quattro Fontane begins in 1610 when Fra Gabriele dell'Assunzione, sent to Rome to reorganize the Order of the Trinitarians, acquires a house near the Four Fountains intersection. Over the years, the order acquires other properties and undertakes transformation works. In 1634, the architect Francesco Borromini is chosen to build the convent and the church. The works begin swiftly, and by 1636, the convent is completed, allowing the monks to settle in.
The Construction of the Church and the Finishes
After the completion of the convent, the construction of the church and sacristy starts in 1638. The first stone is laid in April of that year, and by May 1641, the church is finished. The facade facing via Quattro Fontane is then arranged between 1641 and 1644. Renowned artists such as Pierre Mignard and Giovanni Domenico Cerrini contribute to the decoration of the church by creating frescoes and paintings.
Consecration and Evolution of San Carlo alle Quattro Fontane
The church is consecrated on October 14, 1646 by Cardinal Ulderico Carpegna. Between 1656 and 1659, the first bell tower is built, adopting a triangular shape. In 1666, Borromini plans a chapel and an altar in the crypt for his burial, but he ultimately chooses to be buried at San Giovanni Battista dei Fiorentini. After Borromini's death in 1667, his nephew Bernardo continues the works according to Francesco's wishes.
Final Additions and Ongoing Works
In 1670, the triangular bell tower is demolished and quickly replaced by a new one with a quadrangular shape. The facade works resume in 1675, and in August of the same year, a statue of Saint Charles Borromeo, created by Antonio Raggi, is installed at the center of the facade. Over the centuries, works and additions have been made to maintain and embellish San Carlo alle Quattro Fontane, preserving its unique character and Baroque splendor.
