History Every place has its history. Discover all the events that have marked this place here.
Genesis: A Vision of Ambition
In 1937, the grandiose idea of Cinecittà, a "city of cinema" that would rival Hollywood, was born. Luigi Freddi, director of Italian cinematography under the fascist regime, aimed to create the largest European film production complex. His objective was to promote Italian cinema and produce fascist propaganda films.
A Grand Inauguration in 1937
After an ambitious construction spanning an area of 600,000 square meters, Cinecittà was inaugurated on April 28, 1937, in the presence of Benito Mussolini himself. Dubbed "Hollywood on the Tiber," this film industrial center encompassed soundstages, sets, theaters, gardens, and all the technical sectors necessary for film production. Cinecittà quickly became an essential hub of cinematic creation.
A Hub of Creativity and Diversity
Following Mussolini's fall in 1943, Cinecittà opened up to a greater diversity of films. The greatest names in Italian cinema, such as Roberto Rossellini and Vittorio De Sica, contributed to enriching the myth of Cinecittà. Italian neorealism emerged as a major artistic movement, depicting the social reality of the Italian people. The doors of Cinecittà closed behind the rise of a more authentic street cinema.
Iconic Sets and a Renaissance
Cinecittà became the filming location for numerous famous films, including peplum films and international productions. The grandiose sets recreated ancient cities and historical landscapes. After a period of decline in the 1950s, Cinecittà experienced a new life with the success of spaghetti westerns, largely thanks to the works of Sergio Leone. The 1970s marked a shift towards television, and Cinecittà became a center for TV shows and series production.
A Lasting Influence and Diverse Uses
Cinecittà continues to surprise with its many uses. Popular TV series such as "Kaamelott" were filmed on its sets. The site also hosted prestigious music events, such as the Eurovision Song Contest. In 2014, the Cinecittà World theme park was inaugurated, offering an immersive experience in the world of cinema. Despite a fire in 2007, Cinecittà remains a symbol of the Italian film industry.
