History of Palazzo Corsini alla Lungara
Palazzo Corsini alla Lungara is a Roman palace located in the lower part of the grand Villa Corsini. Constructed in the late 15th century by the Riario family, grandchildren of Sisto IV della Rovere, it has witnessed a rich and varied history over the centuries.
A Prestigious Residence in the 17th Century
In the 17th century, the palace was inhabited by Christine of Sweden, who reportedly held the first gatherings of what would later become the Academy of Arcadia in its garden. In 1736, Cardinal Neri Maria Corsini, nephew of Clement XII, acquired the building and its garden. He entrusted the palace's renovation to Ferdinando Fuga, who transformed it into a true baroque palace, doubling the façade's extension and adding ten giant pilasters.
The Palace During Times of Change
During Napoleon's occupation of Rome, the palace hosted Giuseppe Bonaparte, the emperor's brother. In 1849, a bloody battle for the defense of the Roman Republic against the French took place in the upper part of the villa. In 1883, Prince Tommaso Corsini sold the palace to the Italian government, donating the library and art gallery it contained.
Home to the Academy and Art Gallery
The palace then became the headquarters of the offices and library of the Reale Accademia dei Lincei and the Galleria d'Arte Antica. The Corsini Gallery houses works by Beato Angelico, Giambattista Pittoni, Caravaggio, Rubens, Mattia Preti, Jusepe de Ribera, Jacopo Bassano, and many others. The Botanical Garden of Rome is also located within the palace's garden.
A Historic and Cultural Venue
Palazzo Corsini alla Lungara is a witness to Rome's history and culture through the ages. From its baroque origins to its current role as the seat of an academy and art gallery, it embodies the artistic and intellectual wealth of the eternal city.
