The Domus Aurea: An Extraordinary Imperial Palace
The Domus Aurea, also known as the Golden House, was incredible! It was an immense imperial palace built in ancient Rome, specifically for Nero, spanning dozens of hectares within the city. It was adorned with gold leaf that brought to life magnificent motifs on the frescoed walls. This extraordinary place encompassed several magnificent buildings, expansive gardens, and even an artificial lake. There was a rotating dining room!
A Fascinating Rediscovery
The Domus Aurea, buried for centuries, was partially rediscovered during the Renaissance. But it was only later, through excavations and restoration work, that it was opened to the public in 1999. Unfortunately, it had to be closed again in 2005 due to further deterioration. In 2009, an archaeological team made an extraordinary discovery: they rediscovered the round dining room with its ceiling shaped like a celestial vault.
An Architectural Revolution
You can't imagine the architectural and artistic wonders contained within the Domus Aurea. They had dining rooms with vaults and domes, monumental fountains that diffused freshness and play of light. The mural frescoes were simply fantastic, with trompe-l'oeil that made you believe you were in another world. It was truly the epitome of luxury and refinement.
Disappearance and Inadvertent Protection
After Nero's death, the Domus Aurea was adapted and the buildings were gradually used by the Roman public. Public gardens were created, an amphitheater was built, and the Domus Aurea was buried under heaps of earth during the construction of the Baths of Trajan.
An Inspiration for Great Artists
The rediscovery of the Domus Aurea had a significant impact on the world of art and architecture. The splendid frescoes, complex motifs, and innovative decorative techniques inspired numerous Renaissance and Baroque artists. Painters like Raphael and Michelangelo studied and used the motifs and techniques of the Domus Aurea in their own works. This led to an artistic movement known as "grotesque," characterized by fantastic motifs and decorative elements inspired by the Domus Aurea.
