Holy Angel Bridge
What to See If you want to visit this place, here is some useful information about it.
The Ponte Sant'Angelo is an iconic bridge in Rome that crosses the Tiber River. It is located near the Vatican and offers a breathtaking view of the Castel Sant'Angelo. Originally built by Emperor Hadrian in the year 134, the bridge is rich in history and architectural beauty.
One of the most striking features of the Ponte Sant'Angelo is the presence of ten sculpted angel statues on the parapets. Each statue represents a different angel, carrying symbols and instruments of the Passion of Christ. These statues add an artistic and spiritual dimension to the structure of the bridge.
While crossing the Ponte Sant'Angelo, you will also have the opportunity to enjoy magnificent panoramic views of the city of Rome. On the Vatican side, you can admire the dome of St. Peter's Basilica and the Vatican City walls. On the opposite side, you will have a view of the right bank of the Tiber River and the historical buildings of the city.
Another interesting attraction of the Ponte Sant'Angelo is the presence of lamp posts, adding a touch of charm and romance to the nighttime ambiance. These lamps illuminate the bridge and create a magical atmosphere, perfect for a romantic evening stroll.
Finally, the Ponte Sant'Angelo is also famous for its proximity to the Castel Sant'Angelo, formerly the mausoleum of Emperor Hadrian. After crossing the bridge, you can visit this historic fortress, which now houses a fascinating museum and offers spectacular views from its summit.
Don't hesitate to take a walk on the Ponte Sant'Angelo, admire the angel statues, enjoy the panoramic views, and explore the surroundings for an unforgettable experience in Rome!

The Ponte Sant'Angelo is an iconic bridge in Rome that connects the two banks of the Tiber River facing the Castel Sant'Angelo. Its original name is Pons Ælius. Built in 134 during the reign of Emperor Hadrian (Publius Ælius Traianus Hadrianus), the bridge is steeped in history and architectural beauty.
A Bridge Steeped in History
The Pons Ælius was erected by Hadrian, as evidenced by the dedicatory inscriptions found at each end. The exact date of its construction remains uncertain, although manufacturing marks dating back to 123 have been discovered. Various dates have been proposed: 130, 132, 134, or between 125 and 130. Adorned with Victories and trophies, the bridge provides a majestic access to the imperial mausoleum built on the right bank of the Tiber, which would later become the renowned Castel Sant'Angelo.
A Medieval Period Full of Transformations
In the Middle Ages, the bridge became the main access point to St. Peter's Basilica and the Vatican. Its name evolved to become the "Ponte Sant'Angelo." This Christianization stems from two slightly different traditions, both recounted in the Golden Legend by Jacobus de Voragine. Both traditions attribute a major role to Archangel Michael in the preservation of Rome during a plague epidemic under the pontificate of Pope Gregory the Great in 590. Hadrian's mausoleum was renamed "Castel Sant'Angelo," and the bridge became the "Ponte Sant'Angelo."
A Renaissance Period Full of Transformations
In 1527, during the Sack of Rome by Charles V's Landsknechts, the bridge played a crucial role as it was occupied by the imperial armies besieging Castel Sant'Angelo, where Pope Clement VII had taken refuge. The bridge gained new importance when the Pope returned the following year and embarked on an extensive iconographic program aimed at enhancing the papal reputation. In 1534, statues of St. Peter and St. Paul were placed at the entrance of the bridge, marking its connection with the Vatican and St. Peter's Basilica. The Ponte Sant'Angelo became a symbol of papal power.
A Bold Renovation
A few years later, Pope Alexander VII undertook the renovation of the bridge. The renowned Bernini was commissioned for the project. Inspired by the Red Bridge, which connected the Île Saint-Louis to the Île de la Cité in Paris (now replaced by the Pont Saint-Louis), Bernini introduced an open balustrade, a novelty for stone bridges in Rome, providing pedestrians with a breathtaking view of the Tiber. He also strengthened the abutments of the bridge to protect against river floods. The buildings at the entrance of the bridge were demolished to create Piazza San Celso, and the road was widened to clear the view towards St. Peter's Basilica and the Vatican. The bridge was transformed into a symbolic Via Crucis with ten statues of angels carrying instruments of the Passion adorning the parapet.
