Get ready to dive into the fascinating history of the Museo Ebraico di Roma, located in the underground of the grand synagogue in Rome, on Via Catalana in Italy. This museum will reveal to you the treasures of the Jewish presence in Rome since the 2nd century BC and immerse you in an incredible collection of artworks created by the Jewish community. The visit will also allow you to discover the grand synagogue and the small Spanish synagogue during a guided tour, both located in the same complex.
A Past Full of Significant Events
With the unification of Italy in 1870, the Jews obtained Italian citizenship, marking a major turning point in their history. Towards the end of the 19th century, the Roman ghetto, which housed five synagogues representing different traditions, was demolished following an agreement between the Jewish community and the city authorities. In 1908, the building that housed the ghetto synagogue was also destroyed, but precious elements such as the holy arches and ceremonial chairs were preserved, testifying to their remarkable heritage.
The Grand Synagogue: A Symbol of Unity and Resilience
In 1875, the city of Rome embarked on the construction of dikes along the Tiber River to protect the region from floods, including the old ghetto area. It is in this neighborhood, near the river, that the grand synagogue was erected and completed in 1904. This magnificent synagogue is a powerful symbol of the unity and resilience of the Jewish community in Rome in the face of historical challenges.
The Museum's Evolution towards Excellence
The Jewish Museum of Rome was created in 1960 and initially housed in a room behind the Torah ark of the grand synagogue. In 1980, the staircase leading to the museum was embellished with stained glass by the artist Eva Fischer. To provide an even more immersive experience, the museum was moved to the underground of the grand synagogue, next to the Spanish synagogue. It officially reopened on November 22, 2005. In the early 2000s, the museum was renamed the Jewish Museum of Rome to highlight the close relationship between the Jewish community and the city. Thanks to private donations and the support of the European Union, the Italian government, the Lazio region, and the city of Rome, a foundation was established in 2009 in honor of the former Chief Rabbi, Elio Toaff, to support the museum and its valuable collection.
A Precious Collection Reflecting Jewish History
The art collection of the Jewish Museum of Rome, largely donated by members of the community, is a true treasure that reflects the long history of the Jews in Rome, particularly highlighting the period of the ghetto from 1555 to 1870, when all the Jews of Rome and the surrounding areas were confined to this restricted quarter. The collection includes approximately 900 liturgical and ceremonial textiles, illuminated manuscripts, about 100 marble pieces, and about 400 pieces of goldsmithing.
