History of Rome Fiumicino Airport
Facing the increase in air traffic and the saturation of Ciampino Airport, the Italian Ministry of Aviation began searching for a new location for an airport as early as 1947. Three sites were considered: Magliana Vecchia (in the southwest area of Rome), Castel di Decima (southeast), and Casal Palocco (further away and on the road to Ostia). The latter site was chosen. In 1952, the new General Directorate of Italian Civil Aviation presented a new airport project at the mouth of the Tiber, with two perpendicular runways.
Convergence of Projects and Commencement of Work
The terminal project merged two proposals: those of Mr. Moranti and Mr. Zavitteri, who had initially won the bid, and those of Mr. Luccichenti and Mr. Monaco, whose ideas were incorporated. The project was definitively adopted in August 1958. Construction took place over 21 months. The inauguration occurred on August 20, 1960, but charter flights were the first to land due to the upcoming Olympic Games starting five days later in Rome. The first commercial flight took place on the night of January 14-15, 1961, with a TWA Constellation arriving from New York.
Expansion and Modernization
The airport was not yet complete. Alitalia ordered the construction of hangars for its DC 8 aircraft. In 1973, Runway No. 3 was built, along with a new hangar for Boeing 747 aircraft. Management of the airport was entrusted to Aeroporti di Roma s.p.a. in 1974.
Continued Growth
Since the 1970s, the airport has undergone significant expansion with new state-of-the-art terminals. Currently, it has four terminals (Terminal A, Terminal AA, Terminal B, Terminal C). The fifth Terminal was inaugurated in May 2008.
Modernizations and Future Projects
The airport currently has four runways and is equipped for precision instrument landings. Ongoing work aims to increase the number of allowed movements in case of fog. A major expansion project, known as "Fiumicino Due," is under consideration to add new runways and an additional terminal by 2037, aiming to handle 55 million passengers by 2018.
