Origin and Name of the Mamertine Prison
The Mamertine Prison, formerly known as the Tullianum, was a prison located in the Comitium of ancient Rome. It is estimated to have been built in the 7th century BC, on the northeast slope of the Capitoline Hill, opposite the imperial forums. Nearby was the Gemonian Stairs leading to the Arx of the Capitoline.
Usage and Operation of the Prison
The prison primarily served as a temporary detention place before trials or executions. High-ranking prisoners were kept individually at the homes of Romans or in rural estates. Although imprisonment wasn't a legal punishment under Roman law, war captives, slaves, and lower-status citizens were held there. The Tullianum became the site of detention and execution for historical figures such as Jugurtha, Vercingetorix, and co-conspirators of Catiline.
Christian Significance
Over time, the Mamertine Prison gained Christian significance. According to Christian tradition, Apostles Peter and Paul were imprisoned here. Churches including S. Giuseppe dei Falegnami and S. Pietro in Carcere are now constructed above this site. The altar in the lower chapel is inverted to recall the crucifixion of Saint Peter. These events have added a religious dimension to the site's history.
Archaeological Traces and Interpretations
Archaeological evidence of the Mamertine Prison is complex. The upper chamber, dating back to the 2nd century BC, is trapezoidal and vaulted. The staircase leads to the lower chamber, built with tuff blocks. The origin of the names Tullianum and Mamertine is uncertain, and while traditionally associated with Roman kings, the origin remains debated. Nevertheless, this place is marked by a rich and varied history, reflecting the complexities of Roman society and its evolution.
