An Inspiring Heritage and a Bold Will
The history of MACRo dates back to its deep roots, inheriting the prestigious Galleria Comunale d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea founded in 1925. But it was in the late 1990s that the project of this museum dedicated to contemporary art came to life. In the Nomentano district of Municipio III, on the site of the former Peroni beer factories, a space entirely devoted to the most avant-garde creativity was born. After an exciting industrial transformation, the main museum officially opened its doors on October 11, 2002, marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter for contemporary art in Rome.
A Place of Constant Evolution and Expansion
MACRo continuously reinvents itself and expands its artistic horizons. In 2003, the MACRo Future annex was established in the renovated pavilions of the city's former slaughterhouses, known as Mattatoio, located in the Testaccio district. This innovative space provides a platform for aspiring young international artists, enabling the exploration of emerging creativity.
In addition, a major expansion took place from 2004 to 2010, with the construction of a new space near Porta Pia. This 12,000 square meter space, designed by French architect Odile Decq, houses the museum's permanent collections and an auditorium hosting captivating conferences. This extension, costing 22 million euros, reflects MACRo's commitment to development and sharing contemporary art with an ever-wider audience.
An Inspiring Collection and Captivating Exhibitions
When you visit MACRo, you will discover an impressive collection of works by renowned Italian artists who have left their mark on the art scene since the 1960s. The museum's exhibitions, primarily focused on Italian artists, regularly open up to emerging talents from the international scene. It's a unique opportunity to explore the different facets of contemporary art, be surprised by innovative artworks, and delve into the artistic inquiries of our time.
