A Living Monastery: 17th Century
The Museo di Roma in Trastevere is located on Piazza Sant'Egidio, in a part of the former monastery of the Discalced Carmelites. The initial core of the monastery was founded in the early 17th century in the church of San Lorenzo in Ianiculo, which was later restored and dedicated to Sant'Egidio. The Carmelites erected numerous buildings in the Trastevere neighborhood, establishing their order after the canonization of Santa Teresa of Avila in 1622.
An Artistic Treasure: 20th Century
Over time, the nuns transformed the buildings they owned into a cloistered monastery, to which the church of Saints Crispino and Crispiniano was added. The current museum preserves some discoveries from the demolished medieval churches in its "Cloister." After the unification of Italy, the monastery was expropriated by the Italian State. In the 1960s, the building was renovated to become the Museo di Roma, with the intention of retracing the popular traditions of Rome in the 18th and 19th centuries.
An Update for the Future: Late 20th Century
In the 1990s, the administration of Rome decided to update the museum's content to reflect the changing reality of the city. Thus, the museum's mission was expanded to more comprehensively portray Italian culture from an international perspective. Today, the Museo di Roma in Trastevere stands out with its major thematic photography exhibitions, offering a dialogue between cultures in an interactive and audience-focused environment.
