The Historical Significance of the Palais des Papes
The Palais des Papes of Viterbo, alongside the San Lorenzo Cathedral, is the most important historical monument in this northern Latium city. During the Middle Ages, it served as the papal residence for twenty-four years, from 1257 to 1281. This choice reflects the prestige acquired by Viterbo during that time as a papal seat.
The History of the Palace
This palace took its current form in the mid-13th century during the renovation and enlargement of the city's episcopal palace. In 1257, Pope Alexander IV (elected in 1254) moved the papal curia to Viterbo due to tensions with the people and bourgeoisie, stirred by Senator Brancaleone degli Andalò.
Renovations and Historic Conclaves
The enlargement and renovation were entrusted to Captain of the People Raniero Gatti, a member of an influential Viterbo family. He created the Salle du Conclave, where the first and longest conclave in history took place during the papal election of 1268-1271. The Loggia delle Benedizioni, also remarkable, was built in 1267 by Andrea Gatti.
The Loggia of the Popes and Palace Access
The Loggia delle Benedizioni, also known as the Loggia of the Popes, was built in 1267 by Andrea Gatti. Today, visiting the palace is possible by going to the reception of the museo del colle del duomo in Viterbo.
