Exquisite Interior Decoration
The Palazzo Farnese, located in Piazza Farnese in Rome, is an iconic palace of the Italian High Renaissance. The interior of the palace is adorned with precious decoration created by renowned artists such as Daniele da Volterra, Francesco Salviati, the brothers Taddeo and Federico Zuccari, and Guglielmo Della Porta. The Farnese Gallery is famous for its cycle of frescoes executed by Bolognese artists Agostino and Annibale Carracci, marking the transition to Italian Baroque. The Farnese Collection is renowned for its richness and splendor. Part of this collection is now exhibited in the National Archaeological Museum of Naples and the Museum of Capodimonte, also in Naples.
A Fascinating History of Construction
The history of the construction of Palazzo Farnese is marked by the ambition and vision of the Farnese family. Alexander Farnese, who did not have a proper residence in Rome, first purchased the Palazzo Ferriz in 1495 before having it demolished to build a new palace. His ambition was to manifest his dynastic aspirations of power by constructing one of the grandest palaces in Rome. The construction began in 1517 under the direction of architect Antonio da Sangallo the Younger. After Alexander Farnese's election as Pope Paul III in 1534, the building plans were modified to meet his requirements and his new papal position. Michelangelo then took charge of the palace's construction, adding his artistic touch. Built over a period of 75 years, it is one of the most important buildings of that era. The greatest architects of the time, such as Antonio da Sangallo the Younger, Michelangelo, Jacopo Barozzi da Vignola, and Giacomo della Porta, participated in its design and execution.
Occupants and Transformations
Palazzo Farnese has had several occupants throughout the centuries. After the Farnese family, it became the residence of the Ambassadors of France to the Holy See until 1700. Subsequently, it was passed on to the Bourbons of Spain, who made it the seat of their diplomatic mission in Rome. In 1874, the palace became the property of France and has since housed the French Embassy in Italy. The second floor of the palace is occupied by the French School of Rome, which has been carrying out its research activities since 1875.
Restorations and Preservation
Over the years, Palazzo Farnese has suffered damages and undergone restorations. Restoration work has been undertaken by the French State in collaboration with Italian authorities to preserve this Renaissance gem. Restoration work has been carried out on the frescoes, rooms, and facades of the palace, allowing the preservation of its historical and artistic character.
