Come and explore the Palazzo Venezia, an architectural masterpiece that transports you through the ages. Between 1455 and 1467, at the request of Venetian Cardinal Pietro Barbo, later known as Pope Paul II, this majestic edifice came to life. Imagine the skilled hands of architects and sculptors working passionately to create this jewel of the Roman Renaissance.
The mysterious origins of this architectural treasure
The attribution of paternity for this emblematic building, one of the most important in Renaissance Rome, remains a mystery. Some believe that despite his criticism of Roman construction sites at the time, Leon Battista Alberti is its true designer. Others point to Giuliano da Maiano, a famous sculptor who may have shaped the main door. And there are those who consider Bernardo Rossellino to be the true creative genius. However, according to the most recent critics, Francesco del Borgo, an architect of the papal court under Niccolò V, receives the greatest recognition.
A palace in constant evolution and artistic intricacy
What is certain is that Pope Paul II, formerly known as Pietro Barbo, ordered the expansion of the building in 1466. He entrusted this task to the Florentine architect Bernardo di Lorenzo, under the supervision of the apostolic writer Francesco del Borgo S. Sepolcro. The works included the construction of a portico in front of the Basilica of San Marco and the connection with the existing cardinal's palace.
A vibrant testimony of Italian history
During the pontificate of Paul II, who resided in this apostolic palace for a large part of his reign, the construction of the entire building continued until the portal overlooking the current Via del Plebiscito (1468-1471). The windows adorned with the Barbos' coat of arms still bear witness to that era. Later, Cardinal Marco Barbo supervised the construction of the remaining section. In 1564, as a sign of gratitude to the Republic of Venice for its swift adherence to the decisions of the Council of Trent, Pope Pius IV generously granted it the palace. Since then, this exceptional edifice has become the seat of Venetian ambassadors and orators near the Holy See.
Palazzo Venezia: witness to key moments in Italian history
Palazzo Venezia has also witnessed crucial moments during the fascist period in Italy. On September 16, 1929, Mussolini established his headquarters in this fascinating enclosure. In the Hall of the Globe, the emblem of his power, the light never went out, symbolizing the incessant work of the government. From this prestigious balcony, Mussolini delivered memorable speeches, including the one on June 10, 1940, announcing Italy's entry into World War II, marking a decisive turning point in the history of the Italian nation.
