Information Here are all the useful information about this place (address, opening hours, coordinates, etc.).
History Every place has its history. Discover all the events that have marked this place here.
Discover the ambitious EUR 42 project
In 1942, an incredible project, the Universal Exhibition planned for that year, was conceived but unfortunately never realized. Since 1937, the idea of a park was envisioned within this framework. Above this area, designed as a fifth viewpoint for visitors to Rome, the Palace of Water and Light (which never came to fruition) would have been constructed. Eventually, in the 1950s, the Palazzo dello Sport was built in this area in preparation for the 1960 Summer Olympics awarded to Rome.
Resumption of the project after the war
After the war, the project came back to life. An artificial lake approximately one kilometer in length was created, with a width ranging between 60 and 130 meters, covering a total area of just over eighty thousand square meters. Its depth varies from two to four meters.
Infrastructure for the 1960 Olympic Games
In the park surrounding the lake, several infrastructures were built to host the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome. On the hill overlooking the lake stands the Palazzo dello Sport (built between 1958 and 1960), designed by Pier Luigi Nervi and Marcello Piacentini. On the northwest side of the basin, the same architects constructed the Rose Swimming Pool, which hosted water polo matches during the Olympic tournament.
An ecological and cultural park
The park offers a magnificent view along Via Cristoforo Colombo, with the Palazzo dello Sport overlooking a waterfall fed by the lake, as well as a series of fountains and cascades on the sides. These structures, renovated in 2003 and expanded at the end of the decade, serve a dual purpose: providing oxygen to the lake's ecosystem and supplying water for fire protection systems and park irrigation.
Highlights of the EUR park
The park also houses the ENI General Directorate Palace (Ente Nazionale Idrocarburi) on one side of the lake and the Unicredit Bank Palace (former headquarters of Banco di Roma) on the other side. The pedestrian and cycling area that crosses the park is called the Passaggiata du Japon, in honor of the country that gifted 2,500 sakura (Japanese cherry trees) to Rome during an official visit in July 1959. The park is a privileged location to celebrate hanami (flower viewing), a Japanese tradition of walking under blooming cherry trees and enjoying a picnic in the shade, sometimes dressed in traditional kimonos.
The aquarium project and metro stations
The initial project of the aquarium was revived in 2011 with the start of construction for the Mediterraneum, located along the northern boundary of the lake. However, its opening to the public has been postponed due to technical issues. Two metro stations of Line B were inaugurated on February 9, 1955, the same day as the inauguration of the first section of the Rome Metro, and are located to the north of the park.
