1494: A Visionary Acquisition
Imagine yourself in 1494, when Saint Francis of Paola, thanks to King Charles VIII of France, purchases a vineyard at the top of the monumental Trinità dei Monti staircase, dating back to the 18th century, which overlooks the "Piazza della Trinità". His goal is to build the convent of the Trinità dei Monti for his Order of Minims.
1502-1519: A Gothic Marvel
Let's now jump to the period between 1502 and 1519, when King Louis XII of France constructs the first part of the Trinità dei Monti church in Gothic architecture, next to the monastery. In the 16th century, new buildings, designed by architects Giacomo della Porta and Carlo Maderno, are added to complete this church-monastery. Since then, this church-monastery, along with the neighboring Church of Saint-Louis-des-Français and the nearby Villa Medici, have been under French administration (French quarter).
1620: The Influence of Spain
In 1620, Spain takes possession of this place and renames it the "Piazza di Spagna". It establishes its Spanish palace at number 63, which houses its embassy to the Holy See. This palace is modified, among others, by architect Francesco Borromini, for this special occasion.
1629: The Barcaccia Fountain

In 1644, the architects and sculptors Gian Lorenzo Bernini (Bernini) and Francesco Borromini construct the Palazzo Propaganda Fide to the south of the square. Since 1622, it has been the seat of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples of the Roman Curia.

1723-1726: The Scalinata
Between 1723 and 1726, the future French cardinal Pierre Guérin de Tencin, along with his successor, constructs the Trinità dei Monti staircase, also known as "La Scalinata". This monumental marble staircase in late Baroque Rococo style consists of 138 steps across three levels. It is inaugurated by Pope Benedict XIII on the occasion of the Jubilee (Holy Year) of 1725.
