History of the Roman Forum in Rome
The Roman Forum, a gem of antiquity, was at the heart of Roman life. Originally a marsh, it became Rome's main square around 616 BC with the works of Etruscan kings. The drainage of the marsh and the merging of surrounding communities made it the vibrant center of the city.
Roman Monarchy - Early Republic
During the Roman monarchy, the square was developed and drained by Tarquin the Elder, enabling its commercial and political growth. With the establishment of the Republic, the forum underwent transformations, including the addition of temples, platforms, and the implementation of the Law of the Twelve Tables (the basis of Roman law). The fire caused by the Gauls in 390 BC led to subsequent restorations.
The Forum under the Empire
With the expansion of the Roman Empire, the forum took on its final shape under the influence of Augustus, featuring temples, triumphal arches, and basilicas. However, political power gradually shifted to the Palatine Hill. The forum continued to be adorned with monuments until the Column of Phocas, considered the last one erected.
Medieval Period - Decline and Rediscovery
During the Middle Ages, the forum was neglected and gradually buried. The buildings were converted into churches and later into defensive structures. In the 15th century, Pope Urban V showed interest in the ruins, marking the beginning of archaeological excavations.
Archaeological Excavations - Campo Vaccino
Excavations carried out by Carlo Fea and Napoleon III gradually revealed the remains of the Roman Forum. The site was cleared of grass and debris, unveiling the wonders of antiquity. Today, the Roman Forum remains an impressive testament to the glorious history of Rome.
