An Essential Part of Roman Aviation
As one of the two major airports serving Rome, alongside Rome-Fiumicino Airport, Ciampino has a captivating history since its establishment in 1916. Originally a military airfield, it played a key role during and after World War II, hosting foreign official visits and governmental movements, including presidential visits and even the Pope.

This marked a major shift in Rome's aviation landscape, but Ciampino's history persists, offering travelers a glimpse into its historic past and an entrance to the fascinating city of Rome.
A Tribute to Aviation History with Giovan Battista Pastine

History of Rome-Ciampino International Airport "GB Pastine"
Rome-Ciampino International Airport "GB Pastine" is the second international airport of Rome, the capital of Italy, after Rome-Fiumicino Airport "Leonardo da Vinci". It's a civil, commercial, and military airport located south-southeast of the city center, near the Grande Raccordo Anulare, the ring road around the city.
This hub plays a crucial role for many low-cost airlines and general aviation traffic. It also houses an airbase and headquarters for the 31st Stormo and the 2nd Reparto Genio of the Italian Air Force. The airport is named after Giovan Battista Pastine, an Italian airship pilot who served during World War I.
Ancient Origins
Ciampino Airport was inaugurated in 1916, making it one of the oldest operating airports still in use. From there, on April 10, 1926, Umberto Nobile took off aboard the airship Norge, becoming the first aircraft to reach the North Pole and cross the polar ice cap from Europe to America. In October 1930, the first helicopter prototype designed by Corradino D'Ascanio was tested at Ciampino, setting records of altitude, flight duration, and distance covered.
A Role During the War
During World War II, the airport was captured by Allied forces in June 1944 and became a military airfield for the American Air Force.
After the war, the airport continued to evolve. It was Rome's main airport until 1960, handling over 2 million passengers annually. With the opening of Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport, Ciampino focused on charter and executive flights for decades. In early 2007, terminal facilities were expanded to meet the growing demand of low-cost carriers.
