The Stadium of Domitian is the first example of masonry stadium from the Greco-Roman antiquity, reserved for sports competitions such as running, wrestling, and boxing. It was located in the present-day neighborhood of Parione and is now the Piazza Navona. Its construction dates back to the years 85-86 AD during the reign of Domitian, with the aim of providing an additional venue for celebrations and satisfying the imperial passion for athletics.
An Impressive Stadium of Grand Dimensions
The Stadium of Domitian had an elongated rectangular shape with one short side semi-circular. It measured 276 meters long and 106 meters wide, with an arena of dimensions 193 x 54 meters. It stood out from circuses due to its more modest dimensions and the absence of an obelisk and carceres. It could accommodate approximately 30,000 spectators. Its construction drew inspiration from the stadiums of Olympia and Athens, aiming to encourage the Romans to engage more in athletics and other non-violent disciplines.
Restorations and Transformations
Over time, the Stadium of Domitian underwent restoration and transformation. In the 3rd century, Alexander Severus renovated it, leading to its name becoming Circus Alexandrinus. The stadium remained in use until the 5th century. During the Middle Ages, numerous constructions were built on the structures of the circus, but the arena itself was never permanently occupied. Today, it has become the famous Piazza Navona.
Rediscovery and Conservation
In 1936, during demolition work, a portion of the Stadium of Domitian was uncovered, revealing the walls, pillars, and stairs leading to the upper stands. Although some modern buildings were constructed above the cleared space, the ancient walls remained partially visible from the outside and accessible for visits. Since 2014, the archaeological site has been showcased and exploited by private entities, offering visitors the opportunity to discover this exceptional historical site.
