Imagine yourself immersed in the Tiber Island in the 3rd century BC, where the majestic Temple of Asclepius stood. This river island is a gem in the heart of Rome. Connected to the banks of the Tiber by the Cestius and Fabricius bridges, it offers an extraordinary experience.
A journey into the history of the island
According to legend, the island was formed in 510 BC when the sheaves of wheat harvested in Campo Marzio were thrown into the Tiber during a revolt. Although modern studies suggest that the island existed well before this event, it played an important role in the life of the city. It housed the Temple of Asclepius, the god of medicine, since 292 BC, following an epidemic that ravaged Rome.
The artistic treasures and monuments of the island
The Temple of Asclepius, inaugurated in 289 BC, proudly stood in the southern part of the island, at the current location of the Church of San Bartolomeo. Pilgrims and the sick were welcomed in a portico adjacent to the temple. At the northern end of the island, there are other small sanctuaries and chapels dedicated to various cults, including Faunus, Veiove, Iuppiter Iuralius, and Semo Sancus.
An obelisk, symbolizing the Roman ship that brought the god Asclepius from Epidaurus, stood at the center of the island. When the ship returned to Rome, a sacred serpent, symbol of Asclepius, found refuge on the island. According to legend, the plague mysteriously disappeared after the construction of the temple in honor of the god.
The Church of San Bartolomeo and the martyrs of the 20th century
Above the ruins of the Temple of Asclepius stands the Church of San Bartolomeo. Founded in the 10th century by Emperor Otto III, it is dedicated to the saints Adalbert, Paulinus, and Bartholomew. Inside the church, you can discover a fresco depicting the Virgin and Child, known as the Madonna della Lamp. This image is associated with the flood of 1557 and the miraculous tradition that accompanies it.
In 1999, Pope John Paul II created a commission to investigate the Christian martyrs of the 20th century. This commission worked in the premises of the Basilica of San Bartolomeo, collecting thousands of records. After the Jubilee of the year 2000, a large icon dedicated to the martyrs of the 20th century was placed on the main altar of the church, symbolically representing the events reported by the commission.
The Fatebenefratelli Hospital and the commitment to health
Just in front of the Basilica of San Bartolomeo stands the Fatebenefratelli Hospital, founded in 1583 by the followers of St. John of God. This hospital has been modernized in the 1930s and has become a symbol of dedication and compassion towards the sick.
The Church of San Giovanni Calibita
This church is built on the remains of the Temple of Jupiter Jurarius and is also located to the right of the hospital. This church, consecrated around 870, features a magnificent facade created by Luigi Barattoni in 1640, later completed by Romano Carapecchia in 1711.
A cultural and cinematic location
The Tiber Island is also a venue for cultural events, including the Isola del Cinema. Since 1995, this event has brought together the great Italian and international cinema, offering premieres, encounters with directors and actors, as well as the screening of prestigious films. In the arena of the Isola del Cinema, you can discover cinematic masterpieces and explore the fascinating landscape of the Tiber Island.
