The area where the Trevi Fountain stands today was once crossed by the Aqua Virgo aqueduct, built in 19 BCE during the reign of Emperor Augustus. This aqueduct supplied water to many fountains in Rome, including the one that would later become the Trevi Fountain.
Nicola Salvi's Project
In 1730, Pope Clement XII launched a competition for the design of a new monumental fountain on the site of the existing fountain. Nicola Salvi, a Roman architect, won the competition with his spectacular project.
Construction and Completion
