Villa d'Este: A Magnificent Residence Created by Cardinal Hippolyte d'Este (1550-1572)
Commissioned by Cardinal Hippolyte d'Este, appointed governor of Tivoli by Pope Julius III, Villa d'Este is a true architectural masterpiece. From September 1550 until his death in 1572, the cardinal conceived this sumptuous residence surrounded by terraced gardens, in the Mannerist style. Livio Agresti from Forlì was the artist in charge of the interior decoration, imbuing each room with a unique atmosphere.
The Inspiration for the Villa: A Tribute to Villa Adriana and Roman Water Supply Techniques
Cardinal d'Este drew inspiration from the proximity of Villa Adriana, one of Emperor Hadrian's palaces, to create his own residence. He extensively utilized the marble reserves of Villa Adriana for the construction of Villa d'Este. Furthermore, he implemented the water supply techniques used by ancient Romans to feed the numerous fountains that adorn the villa's gardens.
A Place Celebrated by Artists: Franz Liszt and Villa d'Este
Poetry, painting, and music have celebrated the splendor of Villa d'Este throughout the centuries. Franz Liszt, invited by Cardinal Gustav Hohenlohe, composed piano pieces entitled "Les Jeux d'eaux à la Villa d'Este" and "Les Cyprès à la Villa d'Este," thus bearing witness to the inspiration he derived from this enchanting place.
Villa d'Este during World War I
During World War I, Italy, engaged in conflict against the Austro-Hungarian Empire, requisitioned Villa d'Este starting from January 7, 1916. This magnificent residence, belonging to the Hohenlohe-Schillingsfürst family, was transformed into a military garrison for Italian troops. Since then, the villa has become state-owned property.
