The Villa Vecchia (the old villa) - 1630
Let me tell you the fascinating story of Villa Vecchia! This 1630 building, the oldest in the villa, was erected during the acquisition of the land by Panfilo Pamphilj for his daughter Olimpia Maidalchini's wedding. Imagine the excitement and preparations to celebrate this special event! Later on, Panfilo Pamphilj expanded his domain by acquiring the neighboring vineyards. A true visionary, isn't it?
The new Villa Pamphilj - 1644 to 1653
The new Villa Pamphilj is a breathtaking masterpiece! Between 1644 and 1653, under the pontificate of Innocent X, this architectural marvel came into existence. The plans were executed by Alessandro Algardi and the architect Giovanni Francesco Grimaldi. There were passionate debates regarding the attribution of the plans for the Casino del Bel Respiro, built between 1645 and 1647 in a mannerist, even baroque style. Some claim that Algardi, although a renowned artist, was not an architect and might have been assisted by Carlo Rainaldi under Grimaldi's supervision. Nonetheless, the gardens were embellished until 1653, under the orders of Camillo Pamphili, the nephew of Innocent X. A true paradise on earth!
The Villa Doria Pamphilj - 1760
Imagine the passion and disputes that erupted in 1760 to obtain the Villa Doria Pamphilj after the death of Girolamo Pamphilj! Eventually, Pope Clement XIII decided to grant it to Prince Giovanni Andrea IV Doria, who could add his name and coat of arms to this illustrious place. Giovanni Andrea IV Doria enlisted Gabriele Valvassori to restructure the gardens and add splendid fountains. What a privilege to admire these magnificent enhancements!
The Battle of 1849
A truly thrilling page of history! In 1849, the villa became the theater of a memorable battle against the French troops of the Second Republic. Giuseppe Garibaldi's troops stormed Villa Pamphilj, while the French occupied the neighboring Villa Corsini. What excitement and fervor took hold of this place! The fighting was fierce, with impressive clashes near the Porta San Pancrazio and even inside the villa itself. Ultimately, Garibaldi and his brave soldiers emerged victorious, driving the French into retreat. A breathtaking victory!
Transformation into an agricultural estate - 1856
After so much turmoil, the villa underwent an unexpected transformation in 1856. It was merged with the remains of Villa Corsini, which was destroyed during the 1849 battles. As a result, a vast agricultural estate came into existence. The fields, the crops, all flourished under the Italian sun. A perfect fusion of nature and architectural grandeur!
Opening to the public - 1972
Finally, in 1972, a long-awaited moment occurred: Villa D oria Pamphilj opened to the public! What joy it is to stroll through these gardens steeped in history and splendor! Since then, visitors from around the world have had the chance to discover this cultural treasure.
