Villa Gregoriana: An Ambitious Project to Tame Nature
Built in the Valley of Hell, in the northeast of Tivoli, Villa Gregoriana takes its name from Pope Gregory XVI. This magical place was born from the pope's desire to control the Aniene River, which, with its frequent floods, threatened the foundations of the city of Tivoli perched on the slopes of Mount Catillo. From the writings of Pliny the Younger in the year 105 to a major flood in 1826, the chronicles bear witness to the necessity of these ambitious works.
A Grand Project Combining Nature and Developments
Gregory XVI wished to reconcile the useful with the pleasant by entrusting architect Clemente Folchi with the task of eliminating several waterfalls along a 130-meter slope, channeling the course of the river, and creating a complex of gardens and natural caves in the cool and shaded part of the gorge. The works began in 1832 with the construction of the Traforo Gregoriano, a canal consisting of two parallel galleries measuring 294 meters long, dug into the side of Mount Catillo to divert the river's waters. A magnificent bridge, the Gregorian Bridge, was also erected to provide safe passage to the other side of the valley. On October 7, 1835, the pope himself inaugurated the Traforo, and water now directly feeds the main waterfall.
A Renaissance and a Return to Splendor
After many years of partial closure due to safety reasons, Villa Gregoriana has regained all its splendor. In May 2005, after extensive restoration work carried out by the Fondo per l'Ambiente Italiano (FAI), which manages the site, the entire villa was reopened to the public. The once closed areas are accessible again, offering visitors an unforgettable experience amidst preserved nature. Trees have been replanted, respecting natural diversity, in accordance with the principles of 19th-century romantic gardens. Winding paths along the mountainside guide visitors through the caves, including the famous Neptune's Grotto and Sirens' Grotto, as well as the thermal springs known and utilized since Roman antiquity.
